“We had a crazy week and what a joy to see Ligue 1 come back in full on the channels of Canal +!“, exclaimed Saturday February 6 on News i Gerald-Brice Viret, director general of the antennas and programs of the Canal + group. The paying audiovisual group has recovered all the rights of Ligue 1 until the end of the season. “It’s a joy for Canal + subscribers” and now “we will work on the creation of a channel dedicated to Ligue 1“confirmed Gérald-Brice Viret.
News i: How did you receive the return of Ligue 1 football on Canal +?
We had a crazy week and what a joy to see Ligue 1 come back in full on the channels of Canal +! We had not seen that since 1999. It’s a pleasure for Canal + subscribers for those who love football. We had this good news Thursday evening and there were even tears among the employees of Canal +. It is also a pleasure to bring serenity to the 20 clubs, to the Professional Football League. I am thinking of the teams, the employees, we have visibility, all the matches to end this great season of Ligue 1 on Canal +. There is a very strong emotion. The classico [OM-PSG] Sunday. We had already had the Champions Trophy and I must tell you that we are working very well with the League. This serenity will allow everyone to approach with pleasure the future of this championship that we love so much.
Is it an advantage that the whole of Ligue 1 is on the same channel?
Everything will be on the same channel. We will have the two best posters on Canal +. We will have all of it on Canal + Sport. And we will rediscover the habits we know, Saturday at 5 p.m., Sunday at 9 p.m. All of this will reach the entire Premier League, the Top 14. There will be women’s D1, motorsports. This is the strength of all Canal + sports around this championship that we love so much. We have already stalled all the Ligue 1 matches. We are very attached to Ligue 2 and we will be working from Monday morning to see how we are going to expose this Ligue 2. We are working to ensure that everything is settled next week.
As Maxime Saada said, will there be the creation of a new channel to exploit the rights of Ligue 1?
Maxime Saada, our chairman, fought throughout the week with the support of our shareholder, of all the Canal + teams, to get there. The future, it’s true, would be to have a dedicated channel. We already have a dedicated channel for rugby, Formula 1, and one for the Premier League. We are going to work on the creation of a channel dedicated to Ligue 1. We take all the matches and we are not increasing the prices. Regarding Ligue 2, beIN SPORTS, they are friends with whom we want to collaborate and therefore everything is possible today. With beIN we are partners and I will leave our president Maxime Saada to maneuver to see how we work with them, and we will tell you more next week regarding Ligue 2.
