In March 2016, Thomas Bach, director of the International Olympic Committee, announced that a team of refugees would participate in the Olympics. The decision was made in light of the global refugee crisis and the European immigration crisis, and for the first time at the Rio Olympics, a team of 10 refugee athletes competed. The team is also participating in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics with 29 athletes in 12 sports, of which five are Iranian athletes.
