Guinea has announced that it will withdraw from the Olympics due to the outbreak of the Corona virus.
According to News i and quoted by the Times, Guinea has decided to withdraw from the Olympics due to the Corona epidemic.
A total of 5 athletes were supposed to represent Guinea in these games and will stay at home. Guinea’s sports minister has announced that the country will not participate in the Olympics due to a new wave of coronavirus.
According to AFP, the Minister of Sports explained the decision in a letter to the President and the Guinea National Olympic and Sports Committee.
The Minister of Sports wrote: Due to the resurgence of COVID-19, the government, concerned about the health of Guinean athletes, regretfully decided to cancel Guinea’s participation in the Tokyo Olympics.
However, it was reported that the decision to cancel the team was due to financial constraints as a source close to the government claims that the ministry could not afford to pay for the athletes.
A wrestler, a judoka, two swimmers and a sprinter were to compete for Guinea in Tokyo 2020.
Guinea has competed in 11 Olympics since playing in Mexico City in 1968, but has never won a medal.
In Rio 2016, Guinea sent a team of five athletes in three sports.
It is the first time since Montreal 1976 that Guinea has not participated in the Games.
Guinea’s departure comes after North Korea announced in April that it would not participate in Tokyo 2020 because of concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.
