According to News i Agency’s International Group, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşolu on Wednesday evening called for the cleansing of the Makhmour camp in northern Iraq from Kurdish militants.
According to the news agency “Reuters“It is the duty and responsibility of the Iraqi government to clear the Makhmour camp of Kurdish militants,” Çavuşoوlu said. “Turkey will do it alone if forced to do so.” “We have talked to Iraqi officials about this in the past.”
“We will not allow a traitorous group to use the Makhmour camp as a center for terrorist operations,” said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “We will eradicate terrorism.”
The Makhmur camp is located 180 km south of Turkey and is located in the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq, which Turkish officials claim is home to thousands of Turkish refugees.
The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and the United States, has resumed armed conflict with the central government after breaking a ceasefire agreement with Ankara. The group has been waging an armed struggle against the Turkish government since 1984. According to official Turkish statistics, more than 40,000 people, most of them civilians, were killed in the 37-year conflict.
The camp was established in the 1990s when thousands of Kurds crossed the border from Turkey at Pukuk’s urging. Turkish fighter jets attacked parts of the camp a few days ago.
The US ambassador to the United Nations has expressed concern over Turkey’s attacks deep into Iraq, saying the attack on the refugee camp violates international law. (More details)
