Oscar winner for Fargo in 1997, then 3 Billboards in 2018, Frances McDormand is again crowned best actress in 2021 with Nomadland. Chloé Zhao’s film, which will be released on Wednesday, June 9, also won the statuette for best film and best director.
In Nevada, the economic crisis causes Fern to lose his job as a material handler. Widowed, childless, she decides to take her van and the path of a nomadic life, alone. She meets Swankie who introduces her to a community of people like her. Throughout his encounters, family visits, friendships, solitude, road and contact with nature, Fern discovers a philosopher of life.
Long as the road is long, Nomadland crosses America from Nevada (northeast) to Arizona (central-east). A lonely road movie punctuated by encounters, the film tells of loneliness. Driving, lonely meals, disturbed sleep, repairs and various tiles are Fern’s lot. But all is not dark thanks to Swankie (played by herself), then Dave (David Stratham), her visits to the big parks, collective meetings, where laughter and solidarity dominate, reflection too.
Fern has found his way. When asked by a little girl asking her if she is “a homeless“(“homeless “), she replies “no, one without a house“(“houseless “). As she repeats, her van is her “home“So her house. Damned by the earth, in the Marxist sense, she draws from her destitution the energy which makes her live. She is in that a proletarian. The road is her”.cam“. Chloé Zhao films it like a documentary, taking care of the great outdoors, the rockeries, a recurring theme of the film, air, water, wind, time too.
Activist, Frances McDormand, of all plans, repeatedly plays women going against what is expected of her. Heroic cop pregnant in Fargo, mother denouncing the botched police investigation into the death of her daughter in 3 Billboards, she is in Nomadland the embodied antisystem. Fern is not a rebel, she does not make waves, the others take care of it against her. But she’s staying the course. In fact, it reconnects with the first pioneers who made America, less violence. Despair runs through the film, but it is hope that dominates, in this portrait of a woman and of a social class, specific to America. The movie of the week.
